Small farms take small groups and fill early. Below: the 10 farm tours in the UK to book ahead, what each includes and how they differ.
At Jacksons At Jedburgh, you can take a self-led walk through public farm paddocks, feed goats, meet Highland cows, and see sheep, pigs, and poultry. A walk to an old Roman fort brings wide views and den-building equipment for children. Some visits also include a tractor ride to the cattle fields.
Join a small-group walking tour of Liverpool led by a member of The Farm, often Peter Hooton, and trace the city’s music story beyond the Beatles. Spend about two hours at Faerie Tale Alpacas near Kenilworth with a hands-on farm host. You will learn how alpacas live, meet babies, feed the herd, take photos, and walk an alpaca around the farm. Children under 12 walk with an adult, while those over 12 can lead one themselves.
“The Alpacas were very cute! We learned quite a bit about them. The owner knew her stuff and could tell us a bit about the history of alpacas. She clearly loved them all and was good at handling them so we could all stroke them and feel their lovely soft fleece. Then we walked them around a few fields and paddled in the stream with them. Good fun. She was there all the time incase of any espapees! Gave tips on how to handle them and gave us confidence to handle them. It was a lovely afternoon. Really enjoyed it. Spend one hour at Makars Mushroom Farm inside Summerhall’s underground basement. An English-speaking guide shows you sterile grain production, incubation, and fruiting tents, then helps you inoculate a Lion’s Mane block to take home. Small groups are limited to eight, with time-lapse videos and plenty of questions.

Travel by London black cab from a central London hotel to Yew Tree Farm at Cogges, Downton Village in Bampton, and Highclere Castle. Guides such as John Davies, Dewi, and David add filming stories, scene clips, and flexible pacing. Entry to Cogges and Highclere is included, but lunch is not.

Spend a full day at Adventure Valley in Durham, where you can meet llamas, pigs, rabbits, and other farm animals, then tackle six play zones, go-karts, jumping pillows, slides, tractor rides, and the Valley Express train. Indoor Play Town keeps children busy in wet weather. Entry includes parking, shows, animal sessions, and accessible facilities.
“Kids loved the go karts and jelly belly’s could do with something more for the older kids but was still a good day out. As a pensioner taking the grandkids it’s not a cheap day out should maybe have a discount for pensioners.”
Join sixth and seventh-generation farmer Ailsa Currie for a private two-hour walk around Bellevue Farm on Arran. Feed Highland cows, goats, alpacas, chickens, and seasonal animals, hear how the working farm changes through the year, see barley grown for local whisky, and finish with coffee and biscuits in the barn.
